THE SOMALI TAEKWONDO NATIONAL TEAM PARTICIPATED AND WON BRANZE MEDAL IN THE AFRICAN TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS 2014 IN TUNIS, TUNISIA.

The Somali Taekwondo National athlete – Faisal Aweys 58Kg category representing the country has won Bronze Medal and became the third best in the African Taekwondo Championship 2014 held in Tunis, Tunisia. Faisal was continuously winning points against all of his opponents - countries like South Africa, Libya and Gabon and lost the fourth fight against Egypt, for instance Faisal won over fourteen points in his third fight against Gabon” Said the Somali Taekwondo National Team Head Coach Elton de Souza.

There are three athletes (Two Male and One Female) representing The Somalia Taekwondo National team which are Faisal Aweys – 58Kg, Mohamed-Deq Abdulle – 54Kg and Salima Ismail – 53Kg category. The aim of this tournament is to get points from the competition, which is a G-4 ranked tournament with the gold medallist getting 40 points.



The only female athlete in the Somali Taekwondo National Team, Salima Ismail became fourth in the African Championships 2014 after losing against Algeria and she gained good points in the world ranking. Mohamed-Deq also gained good points in the world ranking and became the fourth best in Africa Championships 2014 but lost in the final fight against the Tunisia. Both Mohamed-Deq and Salima has very good future ahead and hopefully will get medals in the future tournaments.

This competition was very important for the Somali Taekwondo National athletes, and the vice president of Somali Taekwondo Federation Eng. Ahmed Kirish said that the competition would serve as a platform through which the athletes could accumulate points to boost their chances of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. This African Championships Tournament also played a crucial role in determining the country’s qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics in Brazil.



The National Olympic Committee – Somalia (NOCSOM) is delighted and congratulated the Somali Taekwondo National Team and said that there are some sports apart from football they are going to look at so that they can improve in their participation in all ramifications, and taekwondo is one of them.
